Hawaii - 50th Anniversary of Statehood.... On August 21, 2009, the USPS issued a colorful stamp depicting a surfer and a surfing canoe to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Hawaii Statehood. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Honolulu, HI) on the first day of issue
captioned above. Note the clever cancellation combining a hibiscus -
the state flower - and the islands. Also on the envelope are two
additional stamps - a 7-cents air mail stamp issued in 1959,
celebrating Hawaii as the 49th state, and a 20-cents stamp celebrating
the 25th anniversary of Hawaii Statehood. The addition of these two
older stamps, cancelled along with the new one on its 'birthday.
elevate this First Day Cover to a Combo.
The full color cachet
(artwork on the envelope produced by a private company, not the post
office) shows a Hawaiian woman holding up a lei through which we see a
view of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head. It's printed on silk, the luster giving an almost three dimensional quality to the picture.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
