The art of Flytying extends back to the Victorian era when sportfishing became accepted as a gentleman's activity. A single fly could take hours to tie and might use dozens of different materials. To honor these "artists" of the flats and streams, the USPS issued a set of five stamps in 1991 to commemorate five historical Fishing Flies.
Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Cuddebackville, NY) on the first day of issue (May 31, 1991.) One of the five is the Apte Tarpon, created by Flyfisherman Stu Apte to meet the needs of snagging the wary tarpon.
